How to Run

The section should be split into smaller groups, each group should be given recipe and then told to work out the food miles (distance each item has travelled). Explain that this needs them to identify each ingredient, where it is from and how far away that is. Once they have worked out the food miles of the recipe they should then cook the recipe (this can be done at home, in a scout hut kitchen, on camping stoves or open fires). While they are enjoying eating the food they should be encouraged to discuss ways they can reduce food miles of the recipes and in general.

What You Need

  • The ingredients for the recipes that have been chosen.
  • A “recipe card” with instructions on how to cook the recipe.
  • The utensils and means to cook and eat the food depending on where you are cooking. (fire lighting kit for open fires, gas bottles for camp stoves, pots, pans etc)
  • Pens and paper for them to calculate the food miles of the recipes.

Goodness! It’s great to see you young crewmates, you’re a sight for sore eyes! You see, I’ve been worrying all day about what to make our crew for dinner as I’ve lost the menu for tonight!!

For this mission could you please help me decide a menu and cook up something healthy for our hard-working crew?
