Second Mate

Considering Diversity

How to Run

Explain to the section that ships can have crews that come from all over the world, and they can have very different religious beliefs. Ask them to name the religions they know and the festivals that they celebrate. When they have named a few religions and festivals split them into groups and ask each group to plan in detail the celebrations for their chosen festival including traditional food, decorations, and customs etc. once they have planned the celebrations, they should present them and their meaning to the rest of the section. once each group has presented you should then encourage them to discuss the differences in the celebrations and any common themes they all have.

What You Need

  • Pens and paper to plan the celebrations
  • Printed fact sheets about various religions so they plan correctly

Ahhh so these are the new crew mates I’ve been hearing so much about… I hope you’ve not been causing any trouble! I’m sure you’ve been a great addition to the crew.

Speaking of the crew… on board this wonderful ship we have many seafarers from all over the world. We like to make sure everyone is welcome and to do that we celebrate many cultural and religious festivals.

Could you help me to organise some celebrations?

Your tasks:

  • Learn about 4 different religions and the festivals they have (what is the meaning behind them and how are they celebrated)
  • Discuss how the festivals differ and what common themes they share.
  • Plan one of these celebrations in detail (decorations, food, entertainment etc) and celebrate!
